Axial Biotech (Salt Lake City, Utah) developed the ScoliScore test that predicts whether children diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) are likely to progress to severe disease. Of the children that present as at-risk (spine curvature >10%) less than 2% progress to the point where surgery is necessary (>40%), but all at-risk patients receive multiple x-rays resulting in extra costs and radiation exposure. Registration underway for USU Biotechnology Teacher Symposium

Utah State University’s Center for Integrated BioSystems, in collaboration with the State of Utah’s Office of Education, offers teachers across Utah an opportunity to expand their knowledge of biotechnology.

The ninth annual Biotechnology Teacher Symposium takes place Monday, Nov. 9, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Center for Integrated BioSystems located USU’s Logan campus. Registration is free and a continental breakfast and lunch will be served to attendees.

This year’s symposium will explore animal cell culture techniques and animal cloning. It will be an intensive, one-day program open to all science, health-science and agriculture science teachers and pre-service teachers. Both new and past-attendees are welcome.Read Full Article

Axial Biotech to Use Utah Family History Database for Spinal Dx

NEW YORK (GenomeWeb News) – The molecular diagnostics company Axial Biotech has reached an agreement with the University of Utah that allows it to use the university’s genealogical and family history database to study genetic associations for back disorders, the firm said today.

The Salt Lake City-based company will use the Utah Population Database and other genetic resources to expand the indications and patient population for its ScoliScore AIS prognostic test, which determines the risk of progressive scoliosis. The company also will use the database to develop tests for degenerative disk disease and other spine disorders.Read Full Article

USU projects clear funding hurdle

A number of Utah State University projects — including a major new College of Agriculture facility — have passed the first hurdle in gaining millions in Congressional funding.

In total, the Senate Appropriations Committee has approved over $17 million for USU this week. Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, a member of the committee, requested the money for the current fiscal year, which began July 1.Read Full Article

USU seeks teens for biotech event

Utah State University is still recruiting high school students to work with faculty mentors who are conducting biotechnology research this summer.

Registration for the 2009 Biotech Summer Academy has been extended to June 8 to allow more students an opportunity to participate in the five-day program.Read Full Article
