The last year obviously took a great financial toll on all industry sectors, and the biosciences were certainly no exception.
However, with the continued volatility in the broader markets, investors generally remain bullish about biotechnology. They point to the fact that 70 percent of biotech stocks were up in 2009, there was less cash burn, greater survival of companies, and additional new capital in the sector with higher market valuations. A summer institute on environmental health issues for Detroit Public Schools science teachers is receiving support through a $1 million federal stimulus grant to Wayne State University.
The National Institutes of Health grant also funds curriculum supplements for Wayne State education students.
The university said Wednesday the program will supply material on “historical, contemporary and emerging issues in environmental health.” That includes the genetic code, genetic engineering, mutations and trends in biotechnology.Read Full Article

Metro Detroit and Michigan are hitting the high end of the rankings when it comes to investment in biotech, according to the latest BioEnterprise Midwest Health Care Venture Investment Report.
The Detroit-Ann Arbor region ranked second in Midwestern metro areas for biotech investment, with $70.8 million in investment from eight deals. That ranking is up from fifth in 2008 and sixth in 2007. The total investment has remained consistently between $64.9 million and 74 million while the number of annual deals also remained steady between five and eight.
Michigan ranked third in the Midwestern states region with $88.7 million over 11 deals. Minnesota and Ohio took the top two spots with more than $130 million each. The Great Lakes State ranked fourth last year and seventh in 2007 and 2006. Michigan’s annual amount invested climbed from $38.9 million in 2006 to a high of $90 million last year.Read Full Article

MichBio, the association for Michigan’s bioscience industry, has opened registration for its annual Expo & Conference, to be held Nov. 3-4 at the Radisson Plaza Hotel & Suites in downtown Kalamazoo.
The event is seeking presenters for the Emerging Biosciences Showcase on the first day of the conference and for the Emerging Technologies Poster Session on the second day.
``This is the third year for the Emerging Biosciences Showcase, and we expect it to continue growing,’’ MichBio President and Chief Executive Officer Stephen Rapundalo said in a press release. ``Its purpose is to introduce new bioscience technologies and companies emerging in the state of Michigan and surrounding areas to the venture capital and angel investor community. Biotech scientists across Michigan are working on groundbreaking medical advances, extracting cells from patients’ bone marrow to regenerate damaged tissue and developing noninvasive prenatal tests.
An Ann Arbor company is working on a therapy to not only halt the bone loss of rheumatoid arthritis but to stimulate bone regeneration. Midwest health care startups reported $402 million in total investments across 81 companies in the first half of 2009, according to the BioEnterprise Midwest Health Care Venture Investment Report.

The use of biotechnology varieties for corn increased in Michigan from last year, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Biotechnology varieties accounted for 75% of the corn acres planted in Michigan, up from 72% last year.
