The once folksy seed business has taken on a harder edge.
Lawsuits. Accusations of dirty tricks and illegal acts. An impending federal antitrust investigation.
The battle is over biotechnology in seed traits. Altered genetic traits in seed germplasm have helped farmers double their yields in the last third of a century by producing corn and soybeans that can stand up better to wind, excessive moisture, plant diseases, herbicides and insects.
“Biotech has done a lot for the farmers,” Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey said. “But the need for traits has made the seed business a lot more competitive.“Read Full Article

Washington, D.C. (U.S. GC Release) The U.S. Grains Council and the Iowa Corn Promotion Board have sent out an invitation to the press to attend a unique opportunity to meet biotechnology regulators from Latin America and Central America at the U.S. Grains Council’s 2009 International Biotechnology Information Conference (IBIC). The international participants will be taking a tour of an Iowa corn farm and you are encouraged to attend.
Prior to the farm visit, the IBIC program includes meetings in Washington, D.C., with CropLife International; National Corn Growers Association; Biotechnology Industry Organization; International Food Information Council; International Life Sciences Institute; USDA’S Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service; Food and Drug Administration; and Environmental Protection Agency. Following these meetings focused on current U.S. regulatory processes and progression in the biotechnology field, the participants will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for a one-day seminar at Iowa State University, a visit to a grain elevator and meetings with Pioneer, A DuPont Business; Syngenta; and Monsanto Company, focused on the regulatory process, product registration and approval of stacked biotech events.Read Full Article

Cedar Rapids’ growing role in the field of biotechnology grew some more in recent months. And Iowa Governor Chet Culver Tuesday saluted the completion of a state-of-the-art expansion.

An Iowa-based biotechnology firm — and DuPont subsidiary — has established a temporary research facility in Kinston.
Researchers employed by Pioneer Hi-Bred set up shop in DuPont’s textile plant on N.C. 11 North. Company officials are still looking for a permanent site to serve growers in eastern North Carolina and the rest of the South.Read Full Article

The 2009 corn planted area for all purposes is estimated at 87.0 million acres, up 1 percent from last year but 7 percent lower than 2007. This is the second largest acreage since 1946, behind 2007. Growers expect to harvest 80.1 million acres for grain, up 2 percent from last year. Farmers responding to the survey indicated that 97 percent of the intended corn acreage had been planted at the time of the interview compared with the 10-year average of 98 percent.Read Full Articles

A pharmaceutical company that made billions from its blockbuster arthritis drug Humira violated a University of Iowa patent when it used a professor’s invention without permission, according to a new federal lawsuit.
The infringement claim filed by the university alleges that Abbott Laboratories, one the world’s largest biotech companies, used a DNA cloning technique patented by U of I microbiology professor Mark F. Stinski.
The technique is “a fundamental tool used in the biotech industry” used to improve vaccines and many life-saving drugs, according to the lawsuit.Read Full Article
