The United States is often seen as the world’s technology leader, but the 21st century could bring some challenges to the throne.
Consider this: The Rand Corp., a nonprofit research organization, reported in a 2008 document, U.S. Competitiveness in Science and Technology, that the European Union awarded 41,000 science and engineering doctorates in 2002 compared to America’s 27,000. In the paper, Richard Freeman, a research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research, forecast that by 2010 Europe will produce twice as many doctorates in the field as the United States, and China will produce about 25 percent more than the U.S.Read Full Article

“It’s a terrible problem. It’s a very hard state to be in,” he said. “We have no public-private partnerships. We have no incentives to move people here. We have no assistance for entrepreneurs. It’s easier to do the Olympics. ... You can’t get a single dollar for the start-up.”
OK, maybe it’s not that bad.
Illinois has a booming health-care corridor led by Abbott Laboratories. The state has attracted big technology firms, foreign technology companies and technology research dollars through Fermilab, Argonne National Laboratory and its universities. The Illinois Biotechnology Industry Organization Institute (iBIO Institute) announced that as of October 5, 2009, more than 400 high school and community college students have participated in Science Career InvestigationTM, an Internet-based career exploration program announced just three weeks ago. An analysis of web traffic showed that the program already has attracted 445 unique visitors who spent on average 13 minutes per visit reviewing 23 web pages.
Science Career Investigation (SCI) is part of the iBIO Institute’s Finding Your FutureTM programs. Utilizing the vast experience and expertise of industry professionals, SCI gives students current and accurate information about science jobs. The website (http://www.finding-your-future.org) presents details about more than 250 science and business occupations in Illinois life sciences, including job descriptions, skills and education requirements, expected salary ranges and how to advance in a given career.
At SCI’s September 14th launch event at Harold Washington College in Chicago, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn and other dignitaries expressed strong support for the innovative program. The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) today announces future locations of the BIO International Convention. The Convention next heads to Chicago for the 2010 BIO International Convention, being held May 3-6 at McCormick Place. The Convention was last held in Chicago in 2006.
“We are excited to bring the world’s largest gathering of the biotechnology industry to Chicago in 2010. Chicago and the Midwest region are home to a robust biotech hub and a thriving academic community. CSL Biotherapies, a subsidiary of CSL Limited, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of influenza vaccine, announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has licensed the company’s newest vaccine filling and packaging facility, located in Kankakee, Ill. The facility, part of an investment to expand CSL’s U.S. influenza vaccine production capabilities, includes a high-speed, single-dose vaccine syringe filling line.
The primary function of the Kankakee facility is to provide filling and packaging services for CSL Biotherapies’ influenza vaccine supply to the U.S. market. That supply is manufactured in Australia. CSL Biotherapies completed production of its seasonal influenza vaccine, Afluria®, in early July and will deliver more than 8 million doses of Afluria for the upcoming influenza season.
