A South Korean firm’s $3 million Vaxin Inc. investment represents an incremental yet significant milestone for Birmingham’s burgeoning biotech community, industry experts said.
Vaxin recently announced a joint venture with AnC Bio Group giving the Innovation Depot-based company access to research and manufacturing operations in South Korea. Vaxin will receive $2 million in cash and an additional $1 million to launch the joint venture.Read Full Article

While more small biotech firms might have a chance to snap up Small Business Innovation Research grants, competition could become fierce under new legislation recently passed by the House.
The good news is small companies that are majority-owned by venture capital firms – once banned from applying for the government aid – would have a shot at SBIR grants under the bill, which would reverse a 2003 ruling that said those companies do not qualify as small businesses.Read Full Article

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A protein in influenza virus that helps it multiply also damages lung epithelial cells, causing fluid buildup in the lungs, according to new research from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and Southern Research Institute. The University of Alabama at Birmingham has created a Stem Cell Institute that has the potential to be a major economic driver for the region, industry experts said.
The creation of the UAB Stem Cell Institute is scheduled to be voted on Friday at a University of Alabama Board of Trustees meeting in Tuscaloosa. The vote comes after UAB placed ads on May 7 seeking stem cell researchers to fill “junior” and “senior faculty” positions.Read Full Article
